Handleless fronts, open oak shelving and unlacquered brass in a 1920s house that needed light.
This is a narrow galley in a character home, so the brief was to make it feel wider without moving a single wall. We took the uppers off the window wall, replaced them with two runs of solid oak shelving, and moved all the bulk storage into a floor-to-ceiling bank at the far end.
The fronts are handleless with a continuous shadow gap, which keeps the elevation quiet and means nothing catches a hip when two people are cooking.
Brass was left unlacquered on purpose. It will darken unevenly around the tap and the handles, which is the point.
Details that mattered
- Continuous shadow-gap detail on every front
- Solid oak floating shelves, 45 mm thick
- Unlacquered brass tap and hardware
- Appliance garage behind a tambour door
